How to Set Up a Twitter Account

Twitter_bird_logo_2012.svgTwitter is a powerful tool for developing your professional reputation and “brand.” It will help you establish great connections with potential clients, industry professionals and others. Whether you are posting about the homes you have listed, sharing open houses you are hosting, reaching a new audience, or promoting your brand, Twitter is one of the most useful places to achieve your goals.

Remember These Tips:

  • Usernames are unique identifiers on Twitter
  • Your username is the name that your followers use and the URL of your Twitter page
  • You can change your username later
  • Your Twitter password should contain letters, numbers and symbols
  • Confirm your account before trying to personalize
  • Log out of your personal Twitter account before creating a new one

Create a Twitter Account:

Visit www.twitter.com and click ‘Sign up.’

Enter Information in Fields Provided:

  • Full Name
  • Email (you may want to skip adding your phone number until after you set up your account)
  • Password

Create a Username:

Choose a username/handle (up to 15 characters) that is professional and appropriate.

Set Up Your Account:

  • Click ‘Let’s Go’
  • Choose or Search for Topics of Interest – You can tell Twitter what you’re interested in. Examples: real estate, mortgage, home sales, etc. Click ‘Continue.’
  • Import Your Contacts from Gmail or Outlook – If you would like to do this, select the relevant option and click ‘Import Contacts’ and then follow instructions. You can also click, ‘No thanks.’
  • Follow Accounts of Interest – Twitter will suggest accounts to follow based on your location and the interests you entered in Step 2. You can follow them all, just some, or none at all. Click ‘Continue.’

Customize Your Account:

Click on the ‘Edit’ button that appears on the top right of your profile on your homepage to update any of the following:

  • Add a Profile Photo (professional headshot) – 400 x 400 pixels
  • Add Header Photo (photo of your real estate company or photo of the city/town where you sell homes) – 1500 x 500 pixels
  • Update or add additional information regarding your Name, Username, Bio, Location and Website address

Write a Short Bio:

You have 160 characters to let people know what makes your account special and why they should follow you.

Create a Customized Stream on Your Home Timeline:

Great accounts to follow include: Your corporate office, your local partners, industry leaders, industry publications, causes you support, your college or university.
